NPK 23-5-15 pushes nitrogen hard and drops phosphorus low. It is a deliberate choice for one situation: building canopy quickly on a soil that already holds adequate phosphorus.
Decades of routine phosphate application have left many intensively farmed soils with substantial phosphorus reserves. Continuing to apply balanced ratios on those soils does three unhelpful things: it wastes money on a nutrient the crop can already access, it reduces zinc and iron availability through antagonism, and — where runoff reaches watercourses — it contributes to a well-documented environmental problem.
A soil test settles the question. If phosphorus is adequate or high, a low-P grade is the correct response.
This is not a grade to select on intuition. Take a soil test, confirm phosphorus status, and choose accordingly. If phosphorus is genuinely low, a balanced grade such as NPK 15-15-15 is the right call instead.
As the crop moves into fruiting, shift towards NPK 11-8-34 + TE.
