Packaging is usually treated as a detail to be settled after the commercial terms. It deserves more attention than that: it determines handling costs at both ends, how much product fits in a container, how well the material survives transit, and in some cases whether it can be sold in your market at all.
The three main formats
Small bags — typically 25 kg
Advantages: handled without machinery; suit direct sale to growers; easy to sell in small quantities; less prone to total loss if one bag is damaged.
Disadvantages: highest packaging cost per tonne; slowest to load and unload; more labour at every stage; slightly lower payload per container because of packaging weight and stacking geometry.
Suits: retail and grower-direct distribution, high-value products where packaging cost is a small share of the total, markets where handling equipment cannot be assumed.
Big bags — typically 500 kg or 1000 kg
Advantages: much lower packaging cost per tonne; fast to load and unload; efficient use of container space; good payload utilisation.
Disadvantages: require a forklift or crane at both ends; awkward to break down into smaller quantities; a damaged bag loses a lot of product at once; some formats need specific discharge equipment.
Suits: distributors with mechanical handling, large growers, products used at high rates.
Bulk
Advantages: lowest cost per tonne; no packaging waste.
Disadvantages: requires specialised handling and storage; unsuitable for hygroscopic products without controlled conditions; contamination risk; generally impractical for the water-soluble and speciality products discussed on this site.
Suits: commodity straight fertilizers at large scale, not speciality grades.
Palletisation
Pallets are cheap and prevent expensive problems. Specify:
- Pallet dimensions. Standard sizes differ by region. Confirm what your warehouse racking and handling equipment expect before the goods are packed.
- ISPM 15 treatment. Wooden packaging in international trade generally requires heat treatment and marking. Many destinations enforce this strictly, and non-compliant pallets can cause the whole consignment to be held. Plastic pallets avoid the issue entirely.
- Stack pattern and height. Affects stability in transit and how many pallets fit in a container.
- Stretch wrapping and strapping. Keeps the load intact through multiple handling points. Worth specifying rather than leaving to chance.
- Corner protection for loads that will be handled repeatedly.
Container loading
Weight limits usually bite before volume
This is the point most often missed by buyers new to importing. Fertilizer is dense. In practice a container of fertilizer nearly always reaches its maximum payload weight long before it runs out of space.
Two consequences:
- A 40ft container often carries little or no more fertilizer than a 20ft container, because both are limited by weight. For dense cargo, 20ft containers are frequently the more economical choice.
- Road weight limits at destination may be lower than the container’s rated payload. A legally loaded container at origin can be illegal to move by road at the other end. Confirm local limits before specifying the load.
Ask your supplier and forwarder to confirm the loaded weight, and check it against both the shipping line’s limits and your destination road regulations.
Weight distribution
Dense cargo must be distributed evenly along the container floor. Concentrating it at one end creates handling risk and can breach axle weight rules. Loading plans matter more for fertilizer than for light cargo.
Securing the load
A shifting load damages product and packaging and can make the container unsafe to open. Dunnage, airbags and strapping should be specified rather than assumed.
Moisture: the main enemy in transit
Several products in this category are hygroscopic — they absorb water from the air. Calcium nitrate is a well-known example. Absorbed moisture causes caking, and a caked product may be unusable in a fertigation system even if it is chemically unchanged.
Containers are a difficult environment for this. Temperature swings between day and night, and between climate zones on a long voyage, cause condensation on the container ceiling and walls — “container rain” — which then drips onto the cargo.
Mitigations worth specifying:
- Moisture-barrier inner liners in bags
- Desiccant bags or poles inside the container
- Kraft paper or plastic sheeting lining the container walls and ceiling
- Ensuring product is fully dry and cool before packing
- Avoiding direct contact between cargo and container walls
For hygroscopic products on a long tropical route, discuss moisture protection explicitly. It is cheap compared with a caked container-load.
Labelling on the packaging
Confirm before packing:
- Required language for the destination market
- Guaranteed analysis format — elements or oxides (see NPK ratios explained)
- Batch or lot number and date of manufacture
- Net weight in the units the destination requires
- Any hazard or handling symbols required
- Importer or distributor details, where the destination mandates them
- Whether labelling must be applied at origin or can be done after arrival
Relabelling after arrival is possible but costs money and time. Getting it right at origin is nearly always cheaper. Our import requirements checklist covers what to research.
What to tell your supplier
To get packaging right first time, provide:
- What handling equipment you have at destination — forklift capacity in particular
- Whether the product will be sold on as received or repacked
- Pallet dimensions your facility uses
- Your destination port and inland transport arrangement
- Any labelling or language requirement in your market
- Storage conditions the product will be held in after arrival
- Road weight limits at destination
Seven pieces of information, none difficult, that between them prevent the great majority of packaging problems.
A pre-shipment checklist
